Lionel Messi joined his family Sunday to bury his father, Jorge Messi, in a private ceremony at El Prado cemetery on the outskirts of Rosario, Santa Fe Province.
The 68-year-old, who was both Lionel’s father and longtime manager, was laid to rest under tight security. Only close relatives attended, including Messi, his wife Antonela Roccuzzo, and immediate family members. Argentine media reported that privacy measures were strict, with access limited to the family.
Outside the gates, journalists, police officers, and fans gathered quietly. Many supporters brought flowers, jerseys, and letters to honor the man widely credited with guiding his son’s early career and rise to global stardom.

The family did not announce a cause of death. Clarin reported that Jorge had been receiving cancer treatment for several months, including during the 2026 World Cup. His illness drew public attention after Lionel was seen in tears following a goal against Algeria, a moment many linked to concern for his father.
Despite Argentines’ deep affection for Messi, the crowd at the cemetery remained small.
In Rosario, the modest two-story home where Lionel was born has become an unofficial memorial. Fans have left flags, banners, flowers and notes outside the house about 300 kilometers north of Buenos Aires.
