Prompted back from recess by the Nigerian Senate President, Godfrey Akpabio, the Upper Chamber looks set to pass the State Police Bill today.
Newsafricng.com yesterday reported President Bola Tinubu’s lobby and push to overhaul the country’s security architecture.
The Senate will vote on the Bill today, and from fillers gathered within the Chamber, the bill will be expressly passed.
The House of Representatives passed an alteration to the Constitution, taking police from the Exclusive to the Concurrent list, paving the way for the establishment of state police.

The Green chamber voted 289 to one in endorsing the amendment.
Tinubu has never hidden his approval for state policing.
And to drive home his resolve, he has written to Nigeria Upper Chamber; The Senate, to approve a constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police across Nigeria as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s security architecture.

The request was contained in a letter dated June 15, 2026, and was ready on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday by Akpabio.
In the correspondence, Tinubu said the proposed Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) State Police Bill, 2026, seeks to amend the 1999 constitution to provide a legal framework for the creation of state police services.
