Team Nigeria made it 10th gold in style and from 19-year-old latest prodigy Samuel Ogazi who left behind established stars to launch himself at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Ogazi clocked at 44.25 seconds, to become the new Commonwealth champion and further cement his reputation as one of the brightest stars in world athletics.

Former world champion Jereem Richards of Trinidad and Tobago settled for silver in 44.82 seconds, while South Africa’s Zakithi Nene claimed bronze in 45.21 seconds.

Nigeria’s second finalist, Edidiong Okon Udo, also battled bravely in a world-class lineup, finishing eighth in 45.81 seconds after an impressive run to the final.

For Ogazi, the victory is the latest chapter in an astonishing rise that has captivated the athletics world.

The Delta State-born runner announced himself internationally by winning medals at the African junior championships before exploding onto the global stage in 2024.

At the Paris Olympic Games, he became one of the youngest athletes ever to qualify for the men’s 400m final, finishing among the world’s elite and proving that Nigeria had discovered a generational talent.

Since then, the teenager has continued his rapid ascent, consistently running world-class times and establishing himself as one of Africa’s premier one-lap runners.

In Glasgow, he looked every inch a champion.

After winning his opening-round race and dominating the semifinals, Ogazi entered the final as one of the favourites. He lived up to that billing in emphatic fashion, attacking the race with confidence before powering away over the final bend to secure one of the biggest victories of his young career.

His triumph is another shining example of the transformation taking place under the National Sports Commission (NSC).

Athletes across Team Nigeria have repeatedly acknowledged that the renewed focus on welfare and motivation has created the confidence to compete fearlessly on the international stage.

Ogazi’s gold continues what is already one of Nigeria’s most successful Commonwealth Games campaigns in recent history.

The country has celebrated memorable victories from Edidiong Umoafia, Onome Didih, Rafiatu Lawal, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, Ezekiel Nathaniel, Goodness Nwachukwu and other champions, while several more athletes have reached the podium across athletics, para athletics and weightlifting.

With Ogazi’s victory, Team Nigeria’s medal tally now stands at 19 medals—10 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze, with more medal opportunities still to come before the Games conclude.
