FIFA/CAF delegation arrive Abuja to probe NFF mass resignation

Abuja woke up to football diplomacy on full alert this morning as a four-man joint delegation from FIFA and CAF touched down to confront a crisis that has left the Nigeria Football Federation without a head, without a roadmap, and with its credibility hanging by a thread.

The mission, scheduled for September 14 and 15, comes after weeks of resignations, power tussles and a formal freeze order that stopped Nigeria’s football elections in their tracks.

Power Vacuum Triggers Global Intervention
The trouble started on August 27 when former NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi and several Executive Committee members walked out en masse. The exits created an administrative vacuum no one in the Glass House could fill.

On September 7, FIFA’s Chief Member Associations Officer Elkhan Mammadov responded with a hammer blow: the NFF electoral process was halted indefinitely and the planned September 27 Elective Congress in Lafia was suspended.

To keep the lights on, FIFA and CAF named NFF Deputy General Secretary Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme as the sole contact for operations and logistics. The move followed emergency consultative talks on September 1 at the Home of FIFA in Zurich, where Nigeria’s Federal Government, the National Sports Commission and NFF leaders tried, and failed, to find a fix.

Two Days to Save Nigerian Football
Today the delegation opens with a high-stakes meeting with the leadership of the National Sports Commission, before sitting with NFF management and staff.

Round-table sessions are also planned with congress members, the electoral committee and senior government officials. In a bid to broaden input, the NFF has nominated 27 stakeholders drawn from state FA chairmen, coaches, referees, players and clubs across the NPFL, NWFL, NNL and NLO. They will meet the team later at the Abuja Continental Hotel.

For the next 48 hours, every memo signed and every word spoken in Abuja could decide whether Nigerian football resets, or unravels further.
