FIFA has landed its hammer and Argentina is groaning.

In a stadium that felt both electric and eerie — with only 50 percent of fans in attendance — what should have been a tense international showdown exploded into a full-blown brawl that has now cost careers, cash, and pride.

FIFA dropped its verdict Friday, and it landed like a sledgehammer.

Leandro Paredes was named the chief aggressor. Cameras caught the midfielder grabbing Spain’s Garcia by the throat in the dying minutes, and FIFA responded with its harshest penalty: a 10-match suspension and a $90,000 fine. For Paredes, the World Cup qualifiers just became a very long wait from the stands.

He wasn’t alone in the fallout.
Nahuel Molina will also feel the sting — seven matches out, plus a $90,000 fine for his role in throwing fuel on the fire.
Younger stars weren’t spared either. Thiago Almada and Pablo Martín Páez Gavira each received one-match bans and $30,000 fines after being dragged into the melee.

The chaos didn’t end on the pitch. Argentina team official Roberto Ayala was sanctioned for confronting Spain’s Dani Olmo after the match. FIFA handed Ayala a three-match suspension and a $30,000 fine, citing “unacceptable conduct toward an opposing player.”

The images were ugly: shoving, shouting, jerseys pulled, and security rushing in as the half-empty stands roared and gasped. With only half the usual crowd allowed in, every shout echoed louder, every clash looked bigger.

In a statement, FIFA confirmed all parties were notified Friday and have 10 days to “request a motivated decision” if they wish to appeal.

What began as 90 minutes of football has now become a saga of suspensions, six-figure fines, and damaged reputations. For Argentina, the road ahead just got a lot lonelier — and a lot more expensive.
