The Super Eagles began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying journey with a comeback 2-1 win over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday.
Nigeria were stunned in the 16th minute when Ehsan Kari rose to head Madagascar in front. The Nigerian bench protested for offside, but the goal stood.
Iwobi Denied, Ilenikhena Delivers
Éric Chelle’s side pushed for a response and thought they had equalised in the 34th minute through Alex Iwobi, only for the effort to be ruled out after Akor Adams was adjudged to have fouled the Madagascar goalkeeper.
The pressure finally told in first-half stoppage time. On his senior debut, George Ilenikhena marked the occasion in style, finishing calmly from an Alex Iwobi assist to make it 1-1.
It was a dream moment for the young forward, handed his first Super Eagles cap by Chelle.
Usor Completes the Turnaround
Nigeria kept the momentum after the break. In the 65th minute, another debutant stole the spotlight as Moses Usor fired home his first international goal after being set up by Semi Ajayi to put Nigeria 2-1 ahead.
The Super Eagles held on for three vital points in Group L to kick-start their qualification campaign.
Nigeria will now face Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29, in their second group fixture.
