In an emotional tribute released on Wednesday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Omonijo’s death as a painful loss to journalism, the nation and the Church.
Four Decades Of Truth And Courage
President Tinubu did not mince words. He hailed the late sage as a rare breed — a man who turned journalism into a ministry.
“He distinguished himself in the various assignments entrusted to him throughout nearly four decades of meritorious service in journalism, earning a reputation for incisive analysis, professional integrity and a deep understanding of Nigeria’s political landscape,” Tinubu said.
For Tinubu, Omonijo was more than a reporter. He was “a journalist of immense value whose contributions to the profession and the nation would be remembered for years to come.”
The Nation Mourns Its Own
Until his death, Rev. Omonijo served on the Editorial Board of The Nation Newspaper, where his seminal commentaries shaped national discourse. Before that, he was Political Editor of both The Nation and Vanguard Newspapers, and also worked with The Economist.
But beyond the newsroom, he answered a higher calling — serving as Vicar of the Church of Pentecost in Dopemu, Diocese of Lagos West.
President’s Final Prayer
President Tinubu condoled with the Omonijo family, the entire media community especially The Nation family, and the Church of God, praying for the repose of his soul and strength for his family.
A fearless pen is silent. But his ink will never dry.
