Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has been hit with a major setback ahead of Tuesday’s crucial 2027 AFCON qualifier against Guinea-Bissau — debut hero George Ilenikhena could miss the top-of-the-table showdown.

Nigeria came from behind to beat Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo last Friday, with Ilenikhena stepping in for the injured Victor Osimhen to mark his debut with a vital equaliser.

That goal sparked the comeback that was completed by Moses Usor. Now, just days later, the Monaco starlet is a huge doubt.

Chelle Confirms Injury Scare

Speaking at the pre-match press conference in Bissau, Chelle revealed the worrying news that has thrown his plans into chaos.

“We have to manage George. He has a little something, so we will see in the final training session,” Chelle said.[Ilenikhena]

The coach also disclosed that at least two other players are battling sickness ahead of the Group L decider.

“Apart from him, we have two or three players who are sick. We will see before Tuesday.”

Crisis In Attack For Eagles

The news is a bitter blow for the three-time African champions who are desperate to take leadership of Group L.

Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau both have three points from their opening games, with the Djurtus top on goal difference after their 2-0 win over Tanzania.

Losing Ilenikhena, who proved he can fill Osimhen’s big shoes, would leave Chelle short of firepower. The coach is already without Osimhen and may now be forced to reshuffle his entire attack.

Moses Simon, Akor Adams and Moses Usor are now expected to carry the goal burden if Ilenikhena fails to recover in time for the final training session.

The stage is set for a fierce battle at the Estádio 24 de Setembro, but Nigeria may have to do it without their new hero.
