Harry Kane is finally king of world football.
The England captain and Bayern Munich striker was crowned the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner on Monday night, October 26, at the London Palladium – becoming the first Englishman to win football’s biggest individual prize since Michael Owen in 2001.
It was a homecoming victory. Six miles from where he scored his first professional goal and eight miles from the Arsenal academy that released him as a boy for being “chubby”, Kane lifted the trophy in his hometown of London.
The Numbers That Won It
No one could argue with the stats. Kane scored an astonishing 73 goals in 65 games for club and country in the Ballon d’Or period (August 3, 2025 to July 19, 2026) – 61 goals in just 51 games for Bayern, a club record for most goals in a single season.
For Bayern, he delivered:
- 36 goals in 31 Bundesliga matches to win the league title
- 14 goals in 13 Champions League games, including goals in both legs vs Real Madrid in the quarter-final
- A domestic League and Cup double – scoring a hat-trick against Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal final
- The European Golden Shoe and the Gerd Müller Trophy for best striker.
For England, he captained the Three Lions to a third-place finish at the 2026 World Cup, scoring six goals – passing Gary Lineker as England’s all-time World Cup top scorer and finishing among the top five scorers in World Cup history.
Beating The Best
Kane beat a stacked field. He finished ahead of France superstar Kylian Mbappé (2nd) and Spain wonderkid Lamine Yamal (3rd), with 2024 winner Rodri 4th and Lionel Messi 5th.
He becomes only the fifth Englishman ever to win it – after Stanley Matthews (1956), Bobby Charlton (1966), Kevin Keegan (1978, 1979) and Michael Owen (2001) – and the first Bayern Munich player to win it since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981. 36f1
The Speech
An emotional Kane, cheered with chants of “Harry, Harry” from a London crowd, said:
“It being here in London as well has made it extra special… My journey wasn’t straightforward. I wasn’t the kid who went straight to the top. I had to experience the downs. I had to fight my way to be the very best right now.”
He also thanked his wife Kate: “my best friend… You’re my biggest supporter.”
For a player who left Tottenham in 2023 without a major trophy, Kane now has two Bundesliga titles, a German Cup and the ultimate individual honour – the 70th Ballon d’Or.
