The Labour Party candidate for Rivers East Senatorial District, Comrade Beatrice Itubo, has sympathised with victims of the recent flood in Rivers State.
In an exclusive interview with Newsafricng.com, Comrade Itubo described the situation as devastating, saying she understands the pain victims are going through amid the current economic hardship.
“Honestly, it is a bad situation. I sincerely sympathise with all those affected by the flood. I know it is not easy to cope. I feel their pain because I am human.
“The government should please take urgent steps to assist the victims because it is not easy to be displaced by flood. It is a known fact that some families have nowhere to go, and depression and frustration may set in, which could lead to death,” she said.
Comrade Itubo said if elected as Senator representing Rivers East, she would give priority to preventing natural disasters to avoid future occurrences.
According to her, the flooding could be prevented through proper urban planning and construction of drainages and canals to channel rainwater.
Two weeks ago, flood sacked residents of Eneka, Rumuokoro, Ozuoba and Rukpokwu in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. The flood was allegedly caused by heavy downpour.
