To set the record straight, the renowned Guinness World Records has listed the four records broken by Lionel Messi at the 2026 World Cup, which is still at the preliminary stage.
Messi scored twice in Argentina’s 2-0 group-stage win over Austria in North America, taking his World Cup goals total to 18.
That figure moves him past Germany’s Miroslav Klose, who held the previous record with 16.
Following the match, Guinness World Records listed four marks now held by Messi: He holds the record for the most World Cup finals goals with 18, the most World Cup matches played with 28, the most matches won at the tournament with 18, and the most minutes played with 2,489.
The organisation noted the scale of the achievements.

At 38, Messi is appearing in his sixth World Cup. He made his tournament debut in 2006 and remains a key figure for defending champions Argentina. The new records add to his standing as one of the most enduring players in World Cup history.
