Defending champions Nigeria’s WAFCON title defence is over after the Super Falcons fell 1-0 to Cameroon in a tense quarter-final in Casablanca on Sunday.
The loss ended Nigeria’s bid for automatic qualification to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. But the nine-time African champions are not out yet. Two of the four WAFCON quarter-final losers will advance to the intercontinental play-offs, and Nigeria are now targeting one of those slots.
It was a first-half moment of quality that settled it. In the 19th minute, Myriam Nyadjou lined up a free-kick, spotted a gap in the wall, and curled a superb strike past Chiamaka Nnadozie. That goal gave the Indomitable Lionesses a lead they would not relinquish.

Nigeria responded immediately. The Super Falcons pushed forward and created a string of chances, but Cameroon’s defence stood firm. Coach Justine Madugu made an early change in the 38th minute, bringing Uchenna Kanu on for Rinsola Babajide in search of more bite up front.
The pressure increased after the break. Nigeria dominated possession and launched wave after wave of attacks. In the 62nd minute, Madugu went again, introducing Toni Payne and Esther Okoronkwo for Gift Monday and Christy Ucheibe to add fresh legs and creativity.
Despite 70 percent possession and several half-chances, the Super Falcons could not find an equaliser. Cameroon defended deep, blocked shots, and held on for a famous win to reach the semi-finals.
For Nigeria, attention now shifts quickly. With automatic qualification gone, the focus is on securing a play-off place and keeping the World Cup dream alive.
