She was untouchable on screen. Off screen, the fight was real.
Hayden Panettiere — the girl who became a hero, a country queen, and a survivor in the public eye — has died at 36, her family announced Sunday.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” her father, Alan “Skip” Panettiere, said in a statement.
“She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen”. The family asked for privacy “as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss”.
No cause of death has been released and the circumstances are under investigation.

Panettiere was Hollywood royalty before she could drive. A Grammy nominee at 9 for her work as Dot in Pixar’s A Bug’s Life. The determined teammate in Remember the Titans opposite Denzel Washington.
Then came the role that made her immortal: Claire Bennet in NBC’s Heroes. The indestructible cheerleader with superpowers, and the face behind “Save the cheerleader, save the world”.
She reinvented herself again as Juliette Barnes in Nashville, earning two Golden Globe nominations in 2013 and 2014. She faced killers in the Scream franchise. Her most recent role was in January 2026’s psychological thriller Sleepwalker, where she played a grieving mother.
In May she released her candid memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning, speaking openly about postpartum depression, addiction, and recovery.
She leaves behind her 11-year-old daughter Kaya. Three years after losing her brother Jansen at 28, the family mourns again.
SAG-AFTRA, which counted her as a member since 1994, said it joins “in mourning the sudden passing of Hayden Panettiere.”
The light that refused to quit on TV has gone out too soon.
