NIgeria’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign got off to a losing start on Monday as defending champions Spain delivered a clinical 2-0 defeat in their Group F opener in Poland.
From the first whistle, Nigeria looked out of sync against a Spanish side playing with the confidence of champions. The Falconets chased possession, battled for space, and found no answers against a team that dictated every phase of the game.
Early Blow Leaves Nigeria Chasing Shadows
The damage came fast. In the 13th minute, Marisa Garcia struck to break Nigerian hearts and put Spain in front. The goal forced the Falconets onto the back foot immediately, and they spent the rest of the first half trying to punch through a Spanish defence that refused to blink.
Nigeria pushed for a response before the break but lacked the cutting edge. Spain, calm and composed, continued to control tempo and starve the Falconets of rhythm. Despite trailing by just one, the mountain already looked steep for Christopher Danjuma’s girls.
Cerrato’s Late Strike Piles Pressure on Falconets
Spain did not take their foot off the gas. In the 73rd minute, Alba Cerrato delivered the knockout, finishing coolly to make it 2-0 and effectively end the contest. The second goal gave the champions total control and left Nigeria with 17 minutes to salvage pride.
The loss leaves the Falconets with work to do in Group F, which also features China PR and New Caledonia. Their next test comes on September 10 against China PR, a match that now feels like a must-win to keep knockout hopes alive.
With zero points on the board, Nigeria must regroup quickly. The World Cup dream is still alive, but the margin for error has vanished.
