The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has intensified crackdown nationwide, destroying dangerous goods valued at a whopping N22.73 billion between January and August 2026.

Data from NAFDAC Directorate of Investigation and Enforcement shows agency recorded jaw-dropping 5,542 enforcement activities, 213 raids, 821 product seizure entries, 179 premises closed or sealed and 52 arrests in just eight months!

Under Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye and enforcement czar Dr Martins Iluyomade, who also chairs Federal Task Force on Counterfeit and Fake Drugs, NAFDAC handled 474 new cases, concluded 295 cases and carried out 22 destruction exercises.

August sustained fire: 941 activities, 28 raids, 232 seizures, 20 premises sealed, 3 arrests, 37 sanctions, 69 cases concluded.

Cosmetics, Drinks, Drugs Top Killer List

Breakdown shows cosmetics accounted for 401 seizure entries, drinks 215, drugs 112, food 69, chemicals 22, underscoring breadth of public health danger.

Dr Iluyomade explained enforcement goes beyond raids: surveillance, investigation, evidence gathering, interrogation, lab analysis, sanctions and legal action.

Stakeholders say conclusion of 295 cases in eight months shows NAFDAC moving beyond raids to resolution. But with over 5,500 activities, figures show fake products still rampant.

Agency warned manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers to comply with registration, labelling and sourcing requirements, while urging consumers to buy from reputable outlets and report suspicious products.

Experts call for more investment in intelligence, surveillance, lab capacity and consumer awareness to stop killer products before they reach Nigerians!
