Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi announced his Premier League return in grand style on Saturday, smashing home his first goal of the season as Coventry City thumped Sunderland 3-1 to escape the relegation trap.
The Nigerian powerhouse was the hero at the CBS Arena, as Frank Lampard’s Sky Blues finally found their bite.
Awoniyi The Destroyer
With Coventry desperate for goals – both sides came into the clash with just six goals each and rooted in the bottom two – Awoniyi delivered when it mattered most.
In the 37th minute, the former Nottingham Forest man turned predator. He bullied the ball off Sunderland’s Luke O’Nien, shrugged off weak challenges, drove straight through the heart of the Black Cats defence and fired home with a wicked deflection.
The stadium erupted. It was the goal that broke Sunderland’s spirit.
Lampard’s Gamble Pays Off
Coventry boss Frank Lampard, under huge pressure after last weekend’s defeat at Fulham, made four bold changes – including dropping captain Matt Grimes. And it worked.
Tatsuhiro Sakamoto opened the party in the 17th minute with a superb strike from the edge of the box after Sunderland made a mess of a simple cross.

Jack Rudoni killed the contest just seven minutes after the restart, his shot deflecting off Omar Alderete to make it 3-0.
Enzo Le Fee’s penalty was mere consolation for the out-of-form Black Cats.
With fellow Nigerian Frank Onyeka missing through a training ground injury, Awoniyi carried the Nigerian flag alone – and he carried it high. The win lifts Coventry to 15th with nine points from nine matches, two points clear of danger and with their first real hope of survival.
