Arsenal could bank millions from his form

United States striker Folarin Balogun has revealed that his eye-catching celebration after scoring against Paraguay was a heartfelt tribute to Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi, a player he credits with helping him during a crucial stage of his development.

Balogun was one of the standout performers in the match, scoring twice as the United States secured victory. However, it was his celebration after finding the net that quickly attracted attention.

The forward lifted his jersey to reveal a shirt carrying the message “Thank you 17”, leaving supporters and observers wondering about the meaning behind the gesture.

Meanwhile, Balogun’s impressive start to the World Cup could end up benefiting Arsenal as much as the United States.

The former Gunner struck twice in the USA’s latest victory, reminding clubs across Europe of the talent that made him one of Arsenal’s most highly-rated academy graduates.

And if his form continues this summer, Arsenal may have a financial reason to pay close attention.

When Balogun left north London for Monaco in 2023, Arsenal negotiated a significant sell-on clause as part of the deal. Sky Sports at the time stated that the Gunners secured 17.5 per cent of any future transfer fee Monaco receive for the striker.

Balogun has already been linked with a return to the Premier League, with reports in France suggesting clubs continue to monitor his situation.

Now comes the interesting part for Arsenal.

At just 24 years old, Balogun still has plenty of room to develop. A strong World Cup could significantly increase his value, especially if he continues delivering goals on one of football’s biggest stages.

Strikers with his age profile, international pedigree and goalscoring potential rarely come cheap.

If a club decided to test Monaco’s resolve after the tournament, Arsenal would stand to benefit from any profit generated through a future sale thanks to that sell-on agreement.

Arsenal received a package worth up to €40 million when Balogun joined Monaco and retained a percentage of any future transfer. At the time, several reports described the sell-on clause as one of the most valuable elements of the agreement.

With Andrea Berta expected to be active in the transfer market this summer, any unexpected income could prove useful.

Arsenal are pursuing reinforcements in attack and midfield, while several high-profile targets continue to be linked with moves to the Emirates.

Balogun’s future remains uncertain for now.

But after his World Cup brace, clubs will undoubtedly be taking notice.

And if the former Arsenal striker earns himself a big-money move in the months ahead, the Gunners could find themselves celebrating alongside him.
