The light went out in the Smoky Mountains Tuesday.
Dolly Parton, the country music icon whose voice, humor, and heart made her one of America’s most beloved entertainers, has passed away at 80.

Her family announced the news in a video message, saying Parton died peacefully at her Nashville home. A cause of death was not immediately released.

From a Cabin to the World Stage

She started with nothing but a guitar, a dream, and a one-room cabin in Sevierville, Tennessee. Seven decades later, Dolly owned stages across the world.

She gave us “Jolene,” that late-night plea we’ve all felt. She gave us “9 to 5,” an anthem for every worker punching the clock. She gave us “I Will Always Love You” and “Coat of Many Colors” — songs that felt like letters from home.

With 49 albums, 25 No.1 country hits, and 11 Grammys, Parton crossed from country to pop, from music to movies and TV, without ever losing the Tennessee drawl or the big smile. She starred in 9 to 5, Steel Magnolias, and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and became a crossover legend who could fill arenas and still write at her kitchen table.

A Legacy Built on Glitter and Grace

But Dolly’s biggest hit wasn’t a song. It was kindness.
She built the Imagination Library, putting more than 300 million books into children’s hands around the world. She funded vaccines. She showed up after wildfires with checks, food, and hugs.

“Dolly has lived in the light, and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by Carl, her parents, and countless others who have watched her and longed for her to meet them in the heavens,” her nephew Bryan Seaver said in the family’s announcement.

From rhinestones to resilience, Dolly Parton taught us you can be ambitious and humble, glamorous and grounded. America lost its diamond today — but the music, and the light, will never fade.
