It was the call Victor Boniface did not want to get.

Bayer Leverkusen have named their UEFA Europa League squad, and his name is not on it. After months of rehab, after knee surgery, after a difficult loan spell at Werder Bremen that never quite clicked, Boniface is still not trusted to go again.

Coach Carles Martinez did not sugarcoat it. “He is not physically ready,” Martinez said. That one sentence ended Boniface’s European hopes for this stage of the competition. The striker has only recently returned to full training. The knee is healed, but match sharpness, explosiveness, and confidence take longer. Leverkusen are not willing to gamble.

This summer told the story. The Bundesliga club were open to sending him out on another loan. They were even open to selling him outright. No deal materialised, so he stayed. But staying did not mean starting. It meant fighting for fitness in the gym while others fought for places on the pitch.

For Boniface, this is a brutal reset. He exploded onto the scene with goals and power, then injuries pulled the brakes. The Europa League was supposed to be his stage to remind Europe who he is. Instead, he will watch from the stands, build minutes in training, and try to force his way back into Martinez’s plans domestically first.

Leverkusen are protecting an asset. Boniface is protecting a career. The next few months will decide which version of Victor Boniface shows up.
