The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has drawn public attention to over 75 popular consumer products whose counterfeit versions have been found in circulation across the country, following enforcement operations in major markets.

The agency clarified that the list, which has gone viral on social media, is not a declaration that the original brands are fake, but a compilation of alerts and seizures from several years of operations against criminal counterfeiters cloning popular packaging.

According to NAFDAC, the affected categories cut across beverages, dairy, rice, alcoholic drinks and pharmaceuticals.

Beverages and Dairy Products Hit

During a major operation at Cemetery Market, Aba, Abia State in 2025, NAFDAC shut down facilities producing drinks under unhygienic conditions using cloned packaging.

Brands found to have been counterfeited include Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, Schweppes, Lacasera, Hollandia Yoghurt, Super Commando Energy Drink, Feyrouz and Amstel Malta.

Similarly, counterfeit versions of Peak Sachet Milk, Cowbell Sachet Milk, Peak Chocolate Drink, Miksi Sachet Milk, Cadbury Chocolate Drink and Ovaltine were discovered. In August 2025, the agency also issued a specific alert on fake Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachets, noting that Promasidor had stopped producing that variant since September 2023.

Rice and Alcohol Packaging Cloned

In Rivers State, NAFDAC in March 2025 seized over 120 bags of re-bagged rice being sold in counterfeit bags bearing names like Big Bull, Cap Rice, Stallion Rice, Tomato Rice and Mama Pride.

Another raid at Old Court Road Market, Aba on October 14, 2026, uncovered packaging materials worth over N200 million for Jameson, Glenfiddich, Four Cousins, Lord’s Dry Gin, Imperial Blue, Chelsea and Seaman’s Schnapps.

Medicines Also Affected

NAFDAC said several medicines on the viral 75-product list were subjects of genuine alerts. These include falsified Postinor-2 batches identified in August 2025, counterfeit Noristerat Injection 200mg and Cikatem in March 2025, and fake Aflotin 20/120 tablets in April 2025.

Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, described counterfeiters as “merchants of death” and said the agency destroyed over N1.5 trillion worth of fake products between February and March 2025 alone in Idumota, Onitsha and Ariaria markets.

She urged Nigerians to verify products via NAFDAC registration numbers, buy only from reputable sources and report suspicious products through the agency’s official channels, stressing that social media claims alone do not confirm a product is fake without laboratory verification.
