The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Rivers State Chapter, has congratulated the Technical Manager of Rivers United FC, Finidi George, over his recent honour for contributions to sports development.
This was contained in a statement jointly signed by the association’s Chairman, Cyril Dum Wite, and Secretary, Comrade Tonye Orabere, JP.
Finidi was among 63 distinguished Bayelsa indigenes honoured for their contributions to the development of the state in various fields, as part of activities marking Bayelsa State’s 30th anniversary.

The former Super Eagles winger, who earned 62 caps for Nigeria, previously coached the national team and was named Coach of the Year in Nigeria in 2024 after leading Enyimba FC of Aba to the Nigeria Premier Football League title.
During his playing career, Finidi featured for notable clubs including Calabar Rovers, Sharks FC, Iwuanyanwu Nationale, Ajax Amsterdam — where he won the UEFA Champions League — Real Betis and Ipswich Town.
SWAN Rivers State Chapter described the honour as well-deserved, noting that Finidi’s contributions to sports development extend beyond Bayelsa to Nigeria and beyond.
The association urged him not to be overwhelmed by the recognition, but to see it as motivation to do more for sports development.
