For 90 minutes in Mexico City, it rewrote history. Four decades later, it just tried to rewrite the record books and fell short.

The Adidas Azteca ball that witnessed Diego Maradona’s two most infamous and most brilliant moments against England in the 1986 World Cup sold Saturday night for $3.35 million at Heritage Auctions in Dallas.

Bidding opened at $2.5 million. The final hammer landed more than $6.6 million shy of the auction house’s pre-sale estimate of at least $10 million.

Experts authenticated the ball by matching scuffs and panels to photographs from that quarterfinal night, and Heritage called it “arguably the most famous ball in any sport.”

The Night That Shook Wembley

June 22, 1986. Argentina 2, England 1.

First came the moment that still splits pubs and living rooms: Maradona rose with Peter Shilton, punched the ball with his left hand, and grinned as the referee pointed to the center circle. “The Hand of God,” he would call it later.

Four minutes after that, he did the opposite of cheating. He picked the ball in his own half, slalomed past five England shirts, and scored what FIFA would later crown the “Goal of the Century.”

The game was never just football. It was four years after the Falklands War, and 114,000 people in the Azteca felt the weight of that history with every touch.

A Price That Missed the Mark

Heritage pitched this ball as the crown jewel of soccer memorabilia. The market disagreed.

At $3.35 million, it trails far behind Maradona’s shirt from the same match, which sold for nearly $9.3 million at Sotheby’s in 2022.

The ball itself has a modest resale story. It first went for $2.37 million in 2022, then failed to sell in 2023 when bidding stalled at $2.04 million. It came back this summer riding hype around the 2026 World Cup, but closed more than a month after the tournament ended, and without Argentina defending the title.

Legacy Outweighs the Price Tag

Money can buy the leather. It cannot buy the roar, the controversy, or the image of a short man humbling a world power twice in five minutes.

The ball will now sit in a private collection, a relic of a match that was about politics, pride, and genius all at once. The auction may have missed $10 million. The memory didn’t.
