World football’s top bosses are landing in Nigeria next week, but FIFA and CAF have made one thing clear: no one should expect a verdict yet on whether a Normalisation Committee will take over the Nigeria Football Federation.
A high-powered joint FIFA-CAF delegation will touch down in Abuja on September 14-15, 2026, for a two-day mission aimed at diagnosing a federation in free fall.
Emergency Brake Pulled On NFF Elections
The drama escalated on September 7, 2026, when FIFA’s Chief Member Associations Officer, Elkhan Mammadov, ordered an immediate and indefinite suspension of the NFF elective congress earlier slated for September 27 in Lafia.

The suspension came after a wave of resignations blew a hole through NFF leadership. Former President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, former General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, and several Executive Committee members all quit, leaving key offices empty and operations paralyzed.
In the interim, FIFA and CAF have appointed NFF Deputy General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme as the official point of contact. He will handle administration and logistics for the visiting team.
The mission builds on a consultative meeting held at the Home of FIFA in Zurich on September 1, 2026, with the Federal Government, National Sports Commission, and NFF representatives.
Fact-Finding Only, For Now
According to sources, the delegation will meet with NFF administrators, congress members, the electoral committee, and government officials. Their mandate: assess the legal, governance, and electoral implications of the current crisis.
Crucially, both FIFA and CAF stressed the visit is strictly fact-finding. Decisions like imposing a Normalisation Committee or sanctions are not on the table during this trip.
For now, Nigerian football waits. The final call will come after Abuja.
