US immigration arrest hit new high with record 51,000 made in August

America is witnessing the largest immigration arrest surge in modern history, but the planes are not taking off.

Despite a record-shattering 51,000 arrests in August alone – the third consecutive monthly record – U.S. deportations have flatlined at around 1,200 per day, according to preliminary government data reviewed by Reuters.

The explosive disconnect exposes the legal and logistical walls closing in on President Donald Trump’s promise to deliver “the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History.”

In May, with nearly 19,000 fewer arrests, the daily deportation rate was identical.

The Dragnet Gets Wider – And More Desperate

The White House is demanding 3,000 arrests a day, current and former officials say. ICE is answering with a nationwide blitz far bigger than the high-profile raids in Los Angeles and Chicago.

The tactics have changed. Agents are teaming with local police for traffic stops, sweeping homes and job sites, and even making arrests inside immigration courts and at routine green-card appointments. The fuel for the surge? Unprecedented data-sharing between federal agencies and technology to track people who once trusted the government with their addresses.

Hunting The Vulnerable, Not The Violent

The administration insists it is hunting the “worst of the worst.” The numbers tell a different story.

People with criminal convictions made up less than a quarter of July arrests, down from nearly 60% in December 2024. The new targets are people with no criminal record, no deportation order, and often, a pending legal claim to stay.

The easiest people to find are those who tried to follow the rules – asylum seekers, families sponsored by U.S. citizens, and over a million people whose temporary legal status was revoked. They shared their information hoping for legal status. Now that information is a map for ICE.

At airports, tips from TSA led to over 1,200 arrests by early June, even of people who overstayed visas years ago but have since married U.S. citizens or applied for asylum.

No Lawyers, No Planes, No Way Out

For those caught, the system becomes a trap.

Many have valid claims that block immediate removal unless they sign away their rights. Others languish for months. Yajaira Moran, 50, a domestic violence survivor with a pending victim visa, spent five months in detention before giving up and asking to be sent back to Nicaragua. She is still waiting.

Even when deportation is cleared, logistics fail. The Trump administration’s six new Boeing 737s for deportations are still stuck in FAA checks. Existing planes fly half-empty because receiving countries cap numbers or refuse to cooperate. Flights to Haiti’s Cap-Haitien recently carried as few as 57 people.

Arrests are soaring. Deportations are not.
