The Egyptian national football team landed at El Alamein International Airport on Friday morning after a 12-hour flight from Atlanta, capping a historic World Cup 2026 campaign that ended in the round of 16.

Thousands of fans gathered at the airport to welcome the squad home, and organizers prepared an open-top bus to parade the players through New Alamein City in a celebration honoring the team’s tournament run. The bus carried a banner reading “100 million thank yous,” reflecting public gratitude for the squad’s performance on the world stage. Team staff were seen waving both Egyptian and Palestinian flags during the reception.

Egypt’s run in the tournament ended with a 3-2 defeat to holders Argentina in the round of 16 — the Pharaohs’ first appearance in that stage of the World Cup. Egypt had led 2-0 as late as the 79th minute before Argentina scored three goals in the closing stages amid controversy over refereeing.

The team finished the tournament in 15th place overall, having also become the first Egyptian squad to advance out of the group stage.

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is expected to receive the delegation on Saturday to honor the squad, according to a statement from the presidency’s official spokesperson. The presidency said President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi would welcome the players, technical staff, and administrative personnel of the national team.
